week 25 Reviews, Action Plan!
Michael Ollerton
Today i had my formative review, and it went okay but it could have gone better. In this blog post I'm firstly going to talk about what was said in the review and then come up with an action plan for the rest of the year on how i can improve.
What we talked about in the review.
My formative review was marking me on two projects from this year firstly the group project container city and secondly the character project.
For the group project i was given the mark of 58 percent which i believe from some quick research is a 2.2 the highest mark in our group was a 59. So this shows that we all worked pretty equally on this project. Having spoken to other people most of the group project marks were in the 60-69 range which is a 2.1 so i feel we had dropped the ball at some point during this project, the main criticism was it was too easy to get lost, the lights were too intense in the containers and fog was too dense, these are issues we have fixed after submission. hopefully they'll be a chance for this to be marked again, but i've heard that the group project marks are final.
As for the character project, general theme was that it was okay, but had a lot of issues some of which i am really annoyed at myself for letting slip and lost me easy marks. These for example were my house keeping and naming conventions, mine were confusing. Another mistake was i didn't collapse the unwrap modifier on my model. Also next time i need to put my alpha in the albedo alpha channel. Finally the shoes and hair were just bad. The colour palette for the character wasn't great and from a distance the colours just get lost in each other, suggestion was to have blue jeans. Allocation of detail such as modelled studs on belt and jacket but then sports bra was normal map and textured, i should have of modelled it. I should adjust the jacket shape, suggestion to do paint overs of renders. Finally just my development and research for this character didn't feel strong enough and i came up with an idea to early and didn't use some of the required activities for idea generation such a using shapes to build silhouettes.
Action Plan
Now what am i gonna do about this, well as you can imagine i am really angry at myself for not producing better quality work went i know i can do better. I hope that i still have time to turned it around. When i asked if it was still possible to get a first this year, it felt like it wasn't likely though i can definitely get into the 2.1 range. I personally don't want to just forget about the possibility of getting a first and thats what I'm still going to aim for.
Firstly I'm going to begin fixing everything that was wrong with my character even from the design stage, I'm going to begin by doing paint over of my 3d model and then look into how i can improve my character, I am going to spend more time applying correct anatomy from my life drawing classes and try to look into getting someone to pose for me. Im going to ask for crit from the tutors and the third years on this character and make sure i have a really solid design and then remodel the character probably using the old model as a base mesh.
Most of the technical issues with the group project have been fixed so i am going to look into if its possible to resubmit that, other issues with it go down to the original concept which its too late to change sadly.
after this i will start work on editing my turret project i personally know what i need to change in that project and will probably write a separate post on that.
Moving forward from this review I'm going to apply what I've learnt to my current project, its quite scary that this is the last project of the year, so its even more important now that is represent my biggest improvement. I also plan to continue with some personal work which will be studies and gnomon tutorials, scott robertson vids to help strengthen my visual design skills.
I think lastly i might begin work on a new character project for my portfolio.
I've spent all today thinking about how I'm going to fix these grades and what can i do to improve to the amount that i really want to, and at the end of the day its just going to have to be lots and lots of hard work, which starts right now!
