Egx Rezzed, meeting some new friends
Michael Ollerton
This weekend i went down to EGX rezzed in london, i went down as its a great opportunity to talk to developers and see some new indie games. This is the first time i've ever been to something like this, as its nothing like comic con. Firstly on our course the tutors tells us a lot, that this industry is very small and that everyone knows everyone. This was never more evident then at EGX rezzed, everyone i spoke to knew someone.
Anyway the day started with Denzil, josh and I going to a lecture on animation by creative assembly, the developers gave insight into how the animation process has evolved in Total war games over the last 15 years. After the talk we went to have a quick chat with kevin mcdowell who gave the talk. it was the most nervous I've felt while speaking to someone, this guy has achieved so much in the games industry, and here he was just talking to us about how it was just dropped on him a week ago and that he hoped it went alright.
After this we went around playing a few games and having a chat or two with some of the developers, then next people of mention we spoke to were the guys behind LA Cops who actually gave a lecture at dmu last year we spoke to them about their roles on the project and about the course. They asked us if we knew Luc Fonz former student and anna a third year student who worked in the same building as them which really shows how much of a small world this industry is.
Right after this we went out to the courtyard for some fresh air and actually bumped into Del Walker and cameron small. Two former students who are now working in very high up roles in industry. Del walker recently came back to dmu to give a lecture to us, and i didn't get a chance to speak to him so it was awesome to get to have a chat with him here. Cameron small everyone will remember as the brother of mitch a former lecturer at Dmu, cameron is currently working on M3ch and Batman Arkham Knight and Del walker has recently left sony for a job at creative assembly as a lead character artist.
i think the final thing worth mention was denzil got to speak to a former student megan rice, who told him to go speak to a woman named kim blake who really helped her get her job at bossa studio, denzil let me tag along, and she was so informative and reassuring and gave us her card so that we could contact her for careers advice.
This was an awesome experience and i feel i got so much out of it.
